Scratchworks Theatre and Barbican Theatre Presents: The Snow Beast
It’s Christmas time in the snowy Scandinavian town of Seldomberg, which can only mean one thing – the Great Annual Science Fair is here. When Faina, a haphazard, eccentric scientist, discovers her mother’s care home is about to close, she enters the Fair to win the prize money to save it. But her entry falls to pieces and all she’s left with is a tattered old book her mother gave her many years ago - The Snow Beast. Out of desperation, she promises to bring the judges the fabled creature in the book. They give her three days to do so.
With nothing but the book, some test tubes and her grumpy assistant Maude to help her, Faina sets off on an action packed adventure encountering extraordinary spectacles and mountainous obstacles as they battle through the wild, wintry wilderness in search of the truth. Does the Snow beast really exist? Can we separate stories from fact, or do they whirl together like snowflakes in a blizzard?
The Snow Beast is a new collaboration between critically acclaimed theatre company Scratchworks and award-winning writer Jack Dean, and is co-produced with Barbican Theatre. This work-in-progress showing will be a captivating collision of storytelling, an original score and live science experiments that will inspire young audiences to engage with the beauty of the unknown and the magic of the everyday.
