Our original Devon cheese shindig is our homage to Westcountry cheese, and completely free to attend. Since 2004 The Tavistock Real Cheese Fair has been a joy. We always wanted the curd-based artisan and importantly Westcountry cheese shindig to be a HUGE thank you to all the public who have resolved to eat local and support small - and also for those people who have yet to experience the delights of real cheese. We also wanted to thank the wonderful cheesemakers who have become great friends over the 28 years Elise and I have been in this amazing business. The cheese-eaters saluting the cheesemakers and vice versa. And the mongers? – well we are maturing well along with our smashing cheese and still having great fun. We've got the best cheddar makers from Somerset and Devon, we've got blue cheeses to rival any that find their way to this country from anywhere in the world. We've got artisan goat's cheesemakers who create simply stunning cheeses from their home-produced milk and some shining examples of sheep's cheese magic. We've got soft cheese, hard cheese, smelly cheese, nutty cheese, blue cheese and ewe cheese such as (in no particular order): Max Pillar’s goat’s cheese, Jamie Montgomery’s cheddar, Mary Quicke’s cheddar, Ben Harris with Ticklemore cheese, Mark Sharman with the Sharpham Estate wines as well as the soft cheese.
There will be loads of different cheeses to sample and more importantly you get the story as told from the farm and cheese dairy. This is fascinating stuff and those who have been to the fair before will know how exciting and thought-provoking meeting the cheesemakers is. It really does change the way people think about food in the most positive fashion. We have some new cheese makers 'on the block' and some very old ones, in a good extra mature vintage sort of way. There will also be Waterhouse Fayre's chutney, Birgit's bread, juices from Luscombe and Vernon's cider from Milton Abbot, plus loads of different crackers including sour dough.
The Cheese Fair will be held on Saturday 26th August (9:00am-5:00pm) and Sunday 27th August (10:00am-4:00pm) in Tavistock Town Hall.
