Okehampton Carnival returns for 2021
Yes, we are planning Okehampton Carnival 2021!
Following requests from residents who took part in the decorated residential window competition last year we have decided to hold it again this year. More details can be found on the entry forms.
The business and charity shops window competition, with this years theme being ‘Animal World’, will go ahead as usual so it’s time for you all to get your thinking caps on!
Things will be slightly different from previous years in the afternoon. Instead of judging the children indoors we will be holding a Fancy Dress Parade. Participants will meet, in all their wonderful costumes, on the Okehampton College driveway and follow the Okehampton Excelsior Silver Band along Mill Road, down George Street, through Fore Street, back along Mill Road, the bottom of Simmons Way and finish in the College driveway. Any individual child, or group of children, who wish to don a costume are asked to fill in an entry form so we know how many are taking part. All entries will receive a certificate and bag of goodies.
As the evening judging and procession are all outdoors we will be going ahead as usual.
Mill Road (from the waterwheel to its junction with Station Road), St James Street, Park Row and Kempley Road will be closed from 4.30pm for the assembling of tableaux.
Evening judging begins at 6pm.
At 7.15pm the evening procession will start winding its way through Okehampton, led by the Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service.
Roads affected for the evening procession (from 6.30pm) for the safety of those taking part, will be Mill Road, George Street, Market Street, Fore Street, North Street ,East Street, Northfield Road, Neville Road, Victoria Street, Wonnacotts Road, Lopes Crescent, Barton Road, Link Road, Crediton Road, Leaholes Avenue, Limehayes Road and Exeter Road
Marshals will be stationed at the road closures for the safety of all those taking part and to all those watching the carnival. Please do not give them abuse, they are all volunteers.
Thanks to all at Donald’s Menswear for, once again, being the collection/drop off point for the entry forms.
At the end of the day this is YOUR carnival, so have fun and keep your fingers crossed for good weather!
See you all on October 16th!
