Confidence in the kitchen
Recognising that not everyone is a ‘Bake Off star’ a group of enthusiastic volunteers at Tavistock United Reformed Church have devised a free, four-week course for anyone in Tavistock to come and learn how to prepare some good value, tasty meals that are simple to prepare from fresh ingredients. So if you would like to gain a few top tips which will help you save money and eat well, then this course may be just for you.
The course will run for four weeks only and will be for a maximum of six people, in order to be able to give adequate supervision and support to those involved. Organiser Suzy Weston says: "All the food and equipment will be provided and you will be using the well equipped kitchen at the Lower Deck Hall. We will work with each person, in such a way that everyone will be able to take home a meal of main course and pudding for about four people. If there are just two of you in your family then you’ll have enough for two days.
"We’ve chosen a Tuesday morning because that would work for any parents or carers who are dropping off children at school and if you have any children under five with you then we are able to offer a creche which will be run by Stella who is an experienced carer and fully DBS checked."
Suzy is keen to stress that the course is completely free: "We have been given a generous grant by the United Reformed Church to ensure that we can run this course for anyone, regardless of their personal circumstances. And we know that some people feel embarrassed that they never had the opportunity to learn how to cook when they were growing up, so we want to reassure everyone that this course is not to make you feel bad, but to help you have more confidence to cook and eat delicious food."
The four-week course is being held on Tuesday mornings from 3 March, from 9.30 - 11.30am at the Lower Deck Hall and kitchen which can be found below the Tavistock United Reformed Church.
Application details available from Suzy Weston on 07982 622949 or via email tavistockurc@gmail.com
If the course is oversubscribed we will be offering more courses during the year.
