Devon Folk choir, The Lost Sound, is an a cappella, mixed-voice chorus from Buckfastleigh. The choir has been together for 8 years and has been performing for the past six in a variety of venues across south Devon and beyond.
MD, Sandra Smith’s experience and skill in voice coaching has helped the choir develop modern choral skills which they use to perform a varied programme of traditional and new folk music, in 4 to 8-part harmony. For their first few years the singers performed an eclectic range of music but then as Sandra says, ‘Folk music found us’ and it is in this genre that they’re now gaining a reputation in the Devon folk world, performing songs that have inspired centuries of singers, while adding new harmonies, textures, colours and interpretations.
The Lost Sound has shared the stage with west country folk duo, Show of Hands at the Somme centenary event at Exeter and the duo’s 25-year anniversary celebration event at the Royal Albert Hall, as well as featuring on their live ‘Centenary’ album. (July 2016). An audience member commented: “Watching The Lost Sound was something of a revelation to me, I was spellbound”.
Mariners Away’s home port is the King’s Arms, South Zeal, Devon. This hostelry is situated at the midpoint of the Mariners’ Way, a long-distance coast-to-coast path that connected the important ports of Bideford and Dartmouth in the 18th and 19th centuries and, no doubt, the inn offered hospitality to sailors using the path.
The group sings working shanties and songs derived from most sea-going traditions. Over the years they have been busy on the pub, village hall and festival circuit including, among others, restoration work on the historic 60ft cutter Britannia in Gweek, Cornwall, the Lynmouth Regatta, Widecombe Sailing Club regattas and Morwellam Quay folk weekends - festivals at Gloucester, Portmagee, Co.Kerry, Clovelly and Pont Aven in Brittany; they are privileged to be singing again at the Falmouth Shanty Festival this year for the ninth year running. Mariner’s Away has sung for Michael Morpurgo's ‘Homes for City Children’ and continues to support fundraising for the RNLI, Devon Air Ambulance and other local charities. www.marinersaway.org.uk
