Marine biologist Dr Ann Pulsford will be sharing her expertise on the sperm whale in a fascinating and insightful talk, which is being hosted by The Garden House on Wednesday 15th June.
Dr Pulsford will explore the current knowledge on the amazing biology of these deep diving marine creatures - made famous in the novel Moby Dick - and the deep sea encounters with their prey, the giant squid, which has inspired many artworks.
She will reveal how the sperm whale was hunted in the 18th and 19th centuries for their oil, used as fuel, and for the very valuable Ambergris found its digestive system, which was used in the perfume industry.
Dr Pulsford is a contemporary of Professor Malcolm Clarke, who carried out much of the fundamental research on sperm whale biology at the Marine Biological Association in Plymouth and is recognised as an international expert on sperm whales and squid.
- Tickets for the talk are priced at £6 and prior booking is essential. Tel: (01822) 854769 or email office@thegardenhouse.org.uk
