A Community Commemoration of the 1918 Armistice is being presented at St Peter's Church, North Tawton on Friday 12th October (7.30 pm) and Saturday, 13th October (3pm and 7.30 pm). Tickets will be available from North Tawton Post Office from 17 September or on the door, half an hour before the start, priced at £5 adult, £2 for children.
This event brings together local people with different talents to present a picture of how the Great War affected this district 100 years ago. Using a script prepared by local historian Alan Parkinson, pre-recorded voices of members of the community will tell the story with a video presentation, showing pictures and documents of the time. There will be 'live' voices too and actors to show some of the personal pressures felt by ordinary people of that time, whether they served in the war or stayed at home to 'keep the home fires burning'. Local singers and a live band will lead the audience in singing popular songs of the period and there will be a remembrance of those who went to war from North Tawton and surrounding districts but did not return.
Remaining copies of the Okehampton and District History Society's book, edited by A Parkinson, can be purchased from him for £6 inc postage, from Crispins, 5 Essington, North Tawton, EX202EX
