Surprisingly three years have passed since Little Owls first opened its doors to preschool-age children, and in September 2017 the age range was expanded to include two-year-olds. The children have had great fun taiko drumming, making sushi, apple and blackberry picking, creating wonderful paintings and models, flying kites, as well as a trip to Wembury Beach to discover rock pool creatures, not forgetting a visit to Great Western Railway to enjoy a ride on a real steam train! Little Owls is based within Milton Abbot Primary School and although the children have their own classroom, they work alongside Snowy Owls Class as a foundation stage unit, which is led by an early years specialist teacher, Mrs Weatherston. The children enjoy cooked lunches provided by Bridget, the school cook. They also develop fundamental skills with Mr Wickett, who is a sports specialist, and they take part in sports day along with many more enrichment opportunities, ensuring they are always a part of the whole school community. Not only does this familiarise the children with the school environment and staff, it embeds a smooth transition into school life.
Use of our Forest School facilities is a fantastic opportunity to enhance outdoor learning opportunities and every Friday the pre-school welcomes parents, babies and toddlers for a stay and play session. It has been wonderful to meet so many new families within the local community, providing everyone with the chance to connect with nature. Jane Weatherston, the manager of Little Owls, said: “It is so rewarding to see every child thriving within Little Owls, and they are extremely settled when they start school. I am so proud of our early years team who always value and support each and every child’s uniqueness.”
