A local healthcare worker has braved the shave to support the charity she works for.
Sarah Carter, 40 from Crediton, is a Complementary Therapist for local hospice charity, Hospiscare. As part of her fundraising for the upcoming Himalayan Trek for the charity, Sarah decided to do something daring to encourage donations: “I celebrated my 40th birthday in February and, as I was unable to celebrate due to lockdown, I wanted to do something to acknowledge this milestone.
“Like many people, I think these lockdowns have provided a unique opportunity to pause and re-evaluate our lives and I wanted to do something for my own personal growth which could also benefit the charity I work for.”
As a key worker, Sarah has seen first-hand the impact of the pandemic on the local charity. With many of Hospiscare’s fundraising events and activities cancelled due to the multiple lockdowns, the charity is facing a deficit of £1.5 million.
Having previously volunteered for the local charity, Sarah successfully applied for an employed post and was in her role for just eight weeks before the first lockdown was announced. Sarah explains, “This pandemic has shown me more than ever the need for human connection. At times, it has been very challenging to only be a voice on the other end of the phone when you can hear just how much that person needs a hug or to receive a comforting smile. And yet, this enormously difficult time has pulled greater focus to the work we do. I’m incredibly proud that we have kept the individual needs of each and every patient, carer or relative at the forefront of our approach.”
Sarah faced the clippers at the end of May, donating the length of her hair to The Little Princess Trust who make wigs for children. To date, Sarah has raised over £2,200 for the local charity and hopes to continue her fundraising with her new chicly short hair-do.
