There’s no doubt that March has been an awful month for gardeners. Hail, snow, ice, rain and gales have all taken their toll.
The snowdrops enjoyed the cold and visitors enjoyed seeing them in February.
Over the last couple of weeks, temperatures have been rising and The Garden House on Dartmoor can report in to say that spring has arrived and it is full of colour, from tiny delicate bulbs in the grass through to lofty tree-top magnolias.
Nick Haworth, Head Gardener, The Garden House
Nick Haworth, head gardener at The Garden House is happy to see the plants responding to the increased light levels and the temperature changes. “Every year we all talk about spring; is it late, or early, will it be ‘good’. I think it’s a result of seeing through a wet, cold, dark winter. Well, spring will always come and the plants will always respond in whatever way nature intends. The garden is getting on with what it does best. There is plenty of colour and the warm weather that’s forecast will bring everything on. Just like every other year, the plants will do what they want and we’ll all enjoy watching them do it.”
