Music lovers in the locality will not want to miss this rare opportunity to hear two internationally-acclaimed opera singers perform a truly spellbinding programme of Russian romances, arias and Russian and Ukrainian folk songs.
Included in their programme is the Coronation scene aria from Mussorgsky’s opera Boris Godunov, and the ballroom scene from Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin. The second half of the programme consists of an exhilarating kaleidoscope of folk songs, both Russian and Ukrainian, and includes the favourites 'Dark eyes', and ‘Kalinka’- real Russian magic! Here the singers are dressed in traditional embroidered shirts.
Bass-baritone Vassily Savenko studied at the Moscow Conservatoire, winning two major prizes before going on to sing principal roles in major opera houses, including the Bolshoi Opera, Moscow, and Kirov Opera, St Petersburg, where he sang Iago (Otello) under Gergiev. Recent opera highlights include a major European tour of Tchaikovsky’s beautiful lyric opera Iolanta, with the superstar soprano Anna Netrebko.
He is joined by emerging opera star, the baritone Alexey Gusev from Russia, also a prize-winner of major competitions. He has sung principal baritone roles for the Rostov State Opera and Astrakhan State Opera Theatres, and for Scottish opera.
