As we head towards summer, leaves, ferns and mosses of nearly every shade of green create an almost prehistoric environment at Lydford Gorge and in June and July the damsel and dragonflies start appearing, with bright dashes of colour darting over the water and through the trees. A recent visitor commented: “We did the quick walk and absolutely loved it, so tranquil, and the sound of water is so appealing. We will be back again and again.” As the gorge changes through the seasons, a return visit can always be a new adventure. If you need even more persuading, the tea-rooms serve traditional cream teas, ice-creams and light lunches, and the shop has a beautiful new range of picnic essentials.
For something a little more creative join the ranger team to explore the art of woodland sculpture, using wood from the gorge and various hand tools to make a sculpture of your own design. From oversized spiders to spaceships all held together without nails, just wood. Make one as a family or individually, depending on how inspired you are; this event is not just for the kids.
